An Undeserved Trophy

Posted by Remy on April 12, 2009

This year Archer played soccer. Five year olds running mad after a ball is good solid entertainment for a Saturday morning. The team wasn’t very good, but Archer did well. Much of his talk was on receiving a trophy at the end of the year. Only he didn’t receive one.

My old baseball trophies gather dust at my parents house so I floated the idea that I could give him one of my trophies. Could have been Disneyworld for the whole year with the reception that it got. He cleaned it off and carried it around for a couple of days. He took the trophy to the Good Friday service to show his friends. “This is the trophy my dad gave me.”

It’s silly. If he were an older person I’d think he were making fun of me. How could he love so much a trophy that was given to him? I can’t imagine loving something that you didn’t earn yourself…

“Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.”

I gave him a trophy, then three days later it’s Easter Sunday.
