  1. I’m not sure. It was on the Cross. Maybe we should see schism as on an analogy with the Crucifixion.

    The testimony of the church fathers, from St. Paul onward, has been that Christ cannot be divided.

    But connecting schism with the cross is interesting. The sin of schism is a failure to recognize our unity in Christ and an unwillingness to exercise forgiveness. To schism is to deny that sins can be covered and is thus a denial of the cross. Hmmm…

    Just something I thought I remembered, but didn’t the Fathers particularly point to the cross and the lack of broken bones as proof that the Body of Christ can’t be divided?

    Yes, I was just reading St. Athanasius make that very point.
